We had the wonderful opportunity to celebrate the 4th with Rudy's family. It's great to be able to just hop in the car and drive 3 hours to visit relatives! Diego had a wonderful time, it didn't take him long to remember Rudy's parents and he thoroughly enjoyed running around outside with his cousins and calling Daisy (the neighbor's dog).
We took Sugar and Luke with us and they were definitely a hit with the kids as well as Rudy's parents seeing that they tend to "hoover" any food that might happen to make it to the floor. I think this is why Luke has no waist and is beginning to resemble an ottoman.....
After the 4th we made a brief stop back home to unpack and repack for our trip to Virginia Beach. Christine's cousin Craig was getting married in Emporia, VA and we decided to make a vacation of it. Christine's parents met us in VA Beach and we had a blast with them for 2 1/2 days. Now of those 2 1/2 days only 1 was completely sunny! You would think that would have put a damper on things but then you've never had a vacation with Gus (Christine's dad). Lets just say I will never look at those 4 person bikes the same way again.....ahhhh the memories.... One of the highlights of the trip was when we went to eat and Mauhi, Mauhi. Not only was the food wonderful but this is the restaurant owned by one of the Season 3 Contestants of Top Chef (one of my TV addictions)!
After VA Beach (Rudy and Gus left earlier than Christine and her Mom due to an early morning golf game) Christine, her mom, and Diego took the scenic route and drove through some of the little towns/counties that Christine's grandparents lived and were from. We got to see the church where Christine's grandparents were married and the house where her great grandparents lived. We also got the chance to stop and buy some authentic Virginia ham. The little ladies at the store said they would trade the ham for Diego but Christine wasn't having it!
The wedding was wonderful - it seems like weddings are the only time that Christine's side of the family get together so when they do its definitely a party.
Highlights of the wedding trip: Jason pushing golf carts; Diego and his 3 little groupies; Aunt Nancye dancing so much we definitely thought she was going to break something; spending time with Eloyse, Bubba and Erin; Rudy, Gus and the boys spending the majority of the wedding reception outside smoking cigars...I'm sure there are more I just can't remember right now.
After the trip, Christine's parents came back to San Antonio and stayed with us for about a week. It was wonderful because Gus's brother, Miguel, and sister-in-law, Bella, were in town as well visiting Fernando (Gus's nephew). We had a wonderful time visiting and Diego even learned how to say "Tato" (Gus's nickname in Ecuador - and what Diego will call him). It was very sad to see them go as it will more than likely be at least another 6 months before we see them again.
We will definitely cherish the memories we made while they were here.
